The team

Maurizio Sarri decided to play Manuel Lazzari as right back. This was the only change compared to the previous match as he did not have much of a choice regarding the rest of the team due to the numerous injuries. A strange decision since Inter attacked a lot on the wings and Lazzari was probably not first choice for many people.

First half

Three minutes and Lazio already behind. Gustav Isaksen on the left was forced to move back due to the pressing of the Inter players, Lazzari moved out of the way allowing Alessandro Bastoni to steal the ball, he passed to Lautaro Martinez who tried an impossible shot from an impossible angle and scored an impossible goal. An already a difficult game was made a lot more difficult now.

The Biancocelesti did what they could and in the 18th minute had a chance with Mattia Zaccagni who received the ball on the left from Danilo Cataldi and went off, moved centrally and tried a shot which went only slightly too high. In the 25th minute Nicolò Barella went off on the right and gave a good ball on the left to Petar Sucic just inside the box on the left. His volley went wide. This move was favoured by the referee Gianluca Manganiello. Zaccagni was off the pitch due to a previous knock and was waiting to be allowed to come back in. The referee ignored him, there was nobody to cover on his wing and Barella had all the time in the world to cross.

Second half

Lazio a little more courageous in the second half and in the 53rd minute Matteo Guendouzi had a chance but his shot from outside the box was too weak and Yann Sommer parried with no problem. Shortly after Carlos Augusto substituted Denzel Dumfries and Piotr Zielinski came on for Sucic.

In the 63rd minute Cataldi lost the ball in the Biancoceleste half, Barella to Lautaro on the left, quick pass to Federico Di Marco, low cross and Ange-Yoan Bonny had a simple touch to make it 2-0.

Sarri made three changes. Out went Cataldi, Isaksen and Boulaye Dia, in came Matias Vecino, Pedro and Tijani Noslin. Then Luca Pellegrini took the place of Lazzari, Thuram that of Lautaro and Oliver Provstgaard that of Alesso Romagnoli.

In the 77th minute Lazio had a chance to reduce the deficit. Pedro took a free kick, cross into the box, Mario Gila tried a header which hit the post. In the 79th minute Ivan Provedel made a good save on a Carlos Augusto shot. In the 87th minute good ball from Zaccagni to Pellegrini in the box, nobody in the middle, he tried a shot but Sommer was too close and the chance was wasted.

Game over.

A word on the referee Manganiello. Inter’s game was based on pressing and immediate fouls as soon as Lazio had the ball as to stop any possible quick play. These were tactical fouls and should have deserved a few bookings every now and then. But not for the ref. At this point it was too easy for Inter, they could do whatever they wanted. Amazing that Bastoni was not booked at all despite a number of dirty fouls particularly on Pedro.
