The team

Maurizio Sarri was forced to substitute Mario Gila, suspended, with Patric, his first starting game for quite a long time following last year’s injury, and Gustav Isaksen, injured, with Matteo Cancellieri. A difficult game today.

First Half

Just three minutes in the game and Lazio had their first chance. Cancellieri to Matteo Guendouzi on the right wing, his cross was deflected and slowed down, in came the winger who attempted a shot which Edoardo Corvi managed to parry.

In the 13th minute first chance for Parma. Gaetano Oristanio passed from the left over to Adrian Bernabé who controlled the ball and tried a shot, well saved by Ivan Provedel. In the 16th minute Toma Basic took a free kick and crossed inside the box, Adam Marusic volleyed towards the far post and just before Taty Castellanos could head the ball in, Nahuel Estevez intervened on the line sending the ball into corner. Another Basic freekick in the 29th minute was only slightly too high. In the 38th minute long ball from Danilo Cataldi to Mattia Zaccagni on the left wing, the Lazio captain entered the box and passed centrally for Basic. His shot was parried by Corvi. A great save. In the 41st minute Luca Pellegrini crossed from the left, Castellanos tried a bicycle kick, ball to Cancellieri who had a good chance but he shot into the stands.

In the 42nd minute Zaccagni lost the ball and attempted a tackle on Estevez. Red card. From the referee’s bodycam one could see that the decision was legitimate, but Zaccagni did everything he could to avoid contact and in the end almost succeeded. VAR should have intervened. They did not, Lazio in ten men.

Second half

In the interval Enrico Delprato was substituted by Mariano Troilo. In the 47th minute Mateo Pellegrino tried a shot, Provedel saved but lost the ball, Marusic cleared. In the 70th minute Jacob Ondrejka took Oristanio’s place then Patrick Cutrone came on for Adrian Benedyczak. Sarri sent in Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Tijani Noslin and Oliver Prostvgaard for Castellanos, Cancellieri and Patric.

Lazio controlled the game without too much difficulty so the referee decided to make it more difficult for the Biancocelesti. In the 77th minute Basic clashed with Estevez, another red card. There was nothing in the foul, he should have been given a yellow for retaliatory foul.

Despite being two men down, Lazio scored. In the 82nd minute splendid ball from Cataldi to Noslin, only slightly too long, but the Dutchman managed to get to the ball. He dribbled past Corvi and Lautaro Valenti and scored. Fantastic goal!!!

In nine men Lazio controlled. Parma had just one chance in the 84th minute when Estevez tried a shot which Provedel with a marvellous save tipped over the crossbar.

Game over. A wonderful match from Lazio, gutsy and courageous. A night to remember.
