Lazio once again committed suicide and lost the derby

The team

Maurizio Sarri was forced to bring Alessio Furlanetto to defend goal after Edoardo Motta was injured during the week. Alessio Romagnoli was also out through suspension, with Oliver Provstgaard coming in alongside Mario Gila in defence. For the first time this season, Samuel Gigot appeared on the bench.

An important game for Roma in their quest for Champions League qualification, played in a stadium with hardly any Lazio fans after they decided to boycott the derby. Not a good idea.

The match was played at midday in the heat, following a request by the authorities as the tennis final was also taking place that day. A Ridiculous decision.

The match

Roma started on the front foot and Furlanetto was forced into a good save from a Donyell Malen header in the ninth minute. Lazio grew into the game, however, and had chances through a Gila header from a corner in the 33rd minute, which went just wide, and Tijjani Noslin a minute later, whose shot also narrowly missed the target.

Then, in the 40th minute, Roma won a corner. The ball was crossed into the middle and Gianluca Mancini headed it in. A typical Biancocelesti defensive error from a set piece.

That was practically the end of the match, as Lazio struggled to create anything really dangerous while Roma could simply sit back and wait for an opportunity on the counter-attack or from another set piece. Which is exactly what happened in the 66th minute. Another corner, another Mancini header, another goal. Game over.

In the 71st minute, Nicolò Rovella and França Wesley were sent off after a typical derby brawl, and Roma came close to making it 3–0 on several occasions.

Another disappointment for Lazio.
