At the end of the first half of the season Lazio were 6th just one point off Padova, Foggia and Lecco, third, and two behind Brescia. Messina were leaders.

Lazio reached second place in the second half of March after four consecutive wins and stayed in the promotion zone from then on. They had a two-point lead over Brescia and Bari and were four behind Messina.

The match

Compared to Lazio's previous home game (a 0-1 defeat to Parma) manager Juan Carlos Lorenzo’s team decided on a more prudent approach. A waiting game for the Biancocelesti as they controlled the match trying to find the right moment in which to score. As a consequence, the first half was rather boring even though all of this could have changed after just sixty seconds when Mario Maraschi sent a low cross into the box and Graziano Landoni squandered a sitter in front of Dino Zoff. Five minutes later it was Giancarlo Morrone who missed an opportunity when the Udinese keeper saved with his foot. That was all for the first half at least from Lazio’s point of view. The Bianconeri had a chance with Dimitri Pinti later on.

Nothing changed in the second 45 minutes, but as the Lazio fans started to boo, the Biancocelesti scored. In the 67th minute, a misunderstanding between Idilio Cei and Vincenzo Gasperi gave Pinti a chance but his volley was off target. On the counter attack, Maraschi went off on the left, dribbled past a defender, faced Zoff and passed to Paolo Bernasconi who comfortably scored.

Five minutes later Morrone slalomed past three defenders and took a shot: crossbar. In the 84th Zoff was nothing short of miraculous on another Morrone chance. The Italo-Argentinian in the 89th minute dribbled through most of the Udinese defence, and gave the ball to Maraschi for the 2-0.

Absolutely marvellous Morrone in the second half. Unstoppable.
