The season so far
The previous season Lazio had arrived an excellent 3rd in the company of Inter. Great results with victories over Juventus, Milan (both home and away), Inter away and one of the derbies. The Biancocelesti had started so-so but after manager Luigi Ferrero was sacked and technical director Roberto Copernico left, the team had been taken over by Jesse Carver and Lazio in the second part of the season flourished.
Jesse Carver was confirmed and despite numerous difficulties at the club, quite a number of interesting players had arrived: defender Adelmo Eufemi (Livorno), midfielders Luigi Moltrasio (Torino) and Umberto Pinardi (Udinese) plus forwards Humberto Tozzi (Palmeiras) and Karl Aage Præst, legendary winger who had made 233 League appearances with Juventus. Leaving were Francesco Antonazzi (Chinotto Neri), Attilio Giovannini (Nissena), Giorgio Bravi (Taranto), Renzo Sassi (Udinese), Angelo Villa (Spal), Brunello Cocciuti (Reggina) and Rinaldo Olivieri (Triestina).
At the club, President Costantino Tessarolo and his deputy Mario Vaselli had had many economic difficulties. They had promised the players a 2 million lire bonus for the third place but they did not have the cash. The players and managers threatened to strike.
The Biancocelesti had lost their first fixture 3-0 at home to Juventus and had drawn their second in Florence. The situation was not easy.
The match: Sunday, September 30, 1956, Stadio Olimpico, Rome
In the first quarter of an hour Vicenza dominated possession but did not create anything dangerous. In the 17th minute Ermes Muccinelli slalomed through the opposition, reached a favourable position but kicked wide. Not to worry. Three minutes later Pasquale Vivolo in the penalty area sensed that Muccinelli was nearby, ball to the Lugo di Romagna native and it was 1-0 for Lazio.
Not much happened after the goal. Vivolo tried a shot in the 22nd minute that went wide by a whisker and Muccinelli missed a sitter in the 40th minute on an Arne Selmosson assist.
The second half opened with Lazio’s second goal of the day. Umberto Pinardi to Vivolo who beat Pietro Chiappin for speed and once inside the box let go a missile that Giambattista Servidati could not do anything about.
Vicenza attacked furiously but it was the Biancocelesti to have the best chances to score, at least initially: in the 60th minute Servidati parried a Selmosson shot, three minutes later Arnaldo Lucentini shot too softly on a Praest cross.
In the 64th minute Giulio Savoini with a big whack from outside the box hit the crossbar. This scared Lazio who decided to concentrate more on the defensive side rather than try for a third. Despite this approach they did go near 3-0 with Luigi Fuin in the 75th minute when all alone in front of the keeper he tried a shot which hit the post. Vicenza had a last chance four minutes from time with Giorgio Valentinuzzi but Bob Lovati parried into corner.
All in all, a good win for the Biancocelesti, a much needed breath of fresh air.

What happened next
The problems resulted in a terrible start for Lazio and after eight games they were last. But once the economic problems were temporarily solved, the team had started to be more concentrated. At the end of the first half of the season Lazio were 4th with Napoli and Sampdoria, just six points away from the leaders Milan. In the end they finished third for the second consecutive year. Another excellent result, despite the initial problems. They had drawn away to Juventus and Roma, beaten future champions Milan 3-0 and won away against Inter. They finished the season with a 6-2 win away at Palermo.
Molino, Lovati and Selmosson had the most appearances (34) and the Swede the most goals (12).
What happened in Serie A 1956-57

The previous season had seen Fiorentina with their first scudetto. The win had never been in much doubt as halfway the Viola already had a five-point lead. Milan came second, 12 points behind, with Inter and Lazio third.
Obviously, Fiorentina were favourites this year especially because of the convincing way they had won the previous scudetto. During the summer transfer window Milan had sold Gunnar Nordhal to Roma, hence the Giallorossi had to be considered as possible outsiders.
September
Fiorentina crushed Udinese 5-2 away in their first game but then drew at home with Lazio and lost against Torino. A surprisingly bad start for the favourites. Sampdoria and Milan who won all three of their September games were hence leading, but there was still a long way to go.
