Fiorentina Lazio 1-1

Lazio suffered but came home with a point thanks to a Ruben Sosa penalty

Lazio had started well. They were currently third on 13 points in the company of Foggia, Napoli and Inter, two points behind Juventus and four from Milan. Perhaps a few draws too many, 5 in 10 matches, but a decent start. The lack of wins at home had been compensated by four wins away.

The match

Fiorentina played an exceptional first half. Dunga and Massimo Orlando took control of midfield and created numerous opportunities to score. In the 8th minute Marco Branca to Antonio Dall’Oglio who kicked the ball wide despite the open goal opportunity. Another shot from a favourable position by Dunga also went wide in the 12th minute. Then it was Lazio who wasted a chance. Ruben Sosa received the ball from Raffaele Sergio and in front of the keeper tried a shot which shaved the post.

In the 27th minute Dunga took a free kick and crossed into the box, Stefano Pioli headed the ball to Orlando who with another header beat Valerio Fiori.

Fiorentina continued to miss chances, particularly Gabriel Batistuta in the 35th, 39th and 66th minutes. In the latter he even managed to dribble past Fiori but kicked the ball wide. There was a probable penalty for the Viola in the 40th minute but not for the ref.

Lazio managed to avoid being slaughtered and in the second half equalised. Thomas Doll went off in the box near the by-line on the right and was fouled by Orlando. Ruben Sosa took the spot kick and made it 1-1.

An excellent point for the Biancocelesti, probably not too deserved.
