Stadio Olimpico, Rome

Lazio Milan 1-0

The return of fans to the Olimpico gives the Biancocelesti that extra boost taking them to a well-deserved victory against Milan

The team

Maurizio Sarri confirmed the team that beat Sassuolo the previous weekend with the exception of Oliver Provstgaard in place of the injured Alessio Romagnoli and Patric for Danilo Cataldi.

The good news was the return of the fans, albeit just for this single game. The Curva Nord has been boycotting the Olimpico in an attempt to force President Claudio Lotito to sell the club. A perhaps strange attempt since at the moment the club is waiting for the approval of the plan to restructure the Stadio Flaminio so not the best of moments neither for the sale nor acquisition of the club. It is a pity that the fans decided to come to this match rather than the Coppa Italia semi-final, but apparently it was done as a favour to the Inter fans as the Nerazzurri are fighting for the scudetto against city rivals Milan.

 First half

Buoyed by the fans, Lazio started very aggressively creating problems for Milan who took some time to regain possession of the match. In the 23rd minute a massive chance for the Rossoneri. Alexis Saelemaekers crossed form the left and Pervis Estupiñán anticipated Gustav Isaksen but headed the ball just wide.

In the 25th minute Daniel Maldini from the left passed to Kenneth Taylor who advanced and close to the byline let go a massive whack which hit the crossbar. A minute later Lazio scored. Adam Marusic on the right sent a long ball to Isaksen who outpaced Estupiñán, went into the penalty box and beat Mike Maignan.

Milan in deep trouble as Lazio closed all the gaps and even went close to scoring their second when in the 36th minute Maldini went off pressed by Koni De Winter. On the cusp of the area, he tried a shot which was saved by the keeper.

Second half

In the 62nd minute Christian Pulisic crossed from the left and Edoardo Motta managed to anticipate Rafael Leão. Great courage from the young Lazio keeper. Strange to see the Portuguese put as centre forward, a waste.

First substitutions: Zachery Athekame and Davide Bartesaghi for Fikayo Tomori and Estupiñán and later Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Fullkrug for Youssouf Fofana and Leão. Sarri responded by sending in Pedro and Boulaye Dia for Isaksen and Maldini.

Milan continued to attack but Lazio defended splendidly. The Rossoneri did score with Nkunku, but it was disallowed for handball. Nothing really dangerous was created and the Biancocelesti with a gutsy performance took the three points.

The fans really did make a difference. A pity the Curva Nord deemed Inter winning the scudetto more important than Lazio getting to the Coppa Italia final.

Excellent performances from Motta and Patric, put in a position similar to that Marcel Desailly in Fabio Capello’s Milan in the 90s.
