Game 1, Serie A
Sunday, September 10, 1933
Stadio PNF, Rome
Lazio Palermo 1-0
Lazio manage to win in difficult circumstances
Today was the first game of the season.
The match: Sunday, September 10, 1933, Stadio PNF, Rome
Lazio literally started on the word go when they managed to dispossess Palermo and Anfilogino “Filò” Guarisi tried a shot which Archimede Valeriani saved with his fists. Piero Pastore tried his luck in the 5th minute but again the keeper saved. The Biancocelesti continued to attack but were rather sterile, with just a few Guarisi attempts. The game however got dirty and an Alessandro Gambino foul on Raggio Montanari should have seen a more drastic decision by the ref but he only gave a free kick which FIlò kicked wide. In the 40th minute Maximiliano Faotto was kicked by Pastore who reacted with a retaliatory foul. Referee Alfredo Zallone sent the Palermo defender for an early shower.
In the 54th minute Pastore was fouled brutally and forced to leave the pitch. The arguments that followed got heated and José Castelli was sent off. Now Lazio were down to nine men. Palermo took the advantage and Ezio Sclavi was forced to make a great save on a Giuseppe Borel shot. Fortunately, Pastore came back on and immediately had a chance but his shot went just wide. Guarisi was dangerous again in the 65th minute but Valeriani saved.
In the 73rd minute, Lazio scored. Filò reached Montanari who promptly passed to Pastore. The Biancoceleste centre forward dribbled past the Palermo keeper and slotted the ball into the net.
The Rosanero reacted with Borel who missed a chance from a favourable position in the 83rd minute. Lazio controlled the rest of the game and took the two points.
A good start to the season, in difficult circumstances.
