The team

Rino Gattuso decided to give Oliver Provstgaard a rest, handing Diogo Leite his first start of the season. Andrea Pinamonti was back on the bench after missing the previous match through flu.

There was also a remarkable Lazio following in Reggio Emilia, with an estimated 15,000 supporters making the trip to the Mapei Stadium. With such a massive away contingent, it was practically a home game for the Biancocelesti.

First half

It did not take Lazio long to get going. In the second minute, Gustav Isaksen crossed from the right. The Sassuolo defence managed to intercept, but Kenneth Taylor pounced on the loose ball and fired home to make it 1-0.

Riding the wave of enthusiasm, Lazio then let their guard down and allowed Sassuolo back into the game. Armand Laurienté found Josh Doig on the left, and his low cross towards the centre was met by Kristian Thorstvedt, who struck it on the volley. The ball appeared to be heading wide, but an unfortunate deflection off Josip Šutalo wrong-footed Christos Mandas and brought the home side level.

There was no need to worry for long. In the 13th minute, Mattia Zaccagni picked up the ball on the left, just outside the penalty area, moved towards the centre and produced a superb pass to Isaksen, who was waiting inside the box on the right. The Dane made no mistake, sending a magnificent shot into the far corner to restore Lazio's lead.

The Biancocelesti were now cutting through the Sassuolo defence like a hot knife through butter. In the 16th minute, Davide Frattesi found Taylor on the left. His low cross travelled beyond Zaccagni and Tijjani Noslin, but reached Romano Floriani at the far post. The defender made no mistake, scoring his first goal for Lazio.

Noslin fired over the crossbar in the 25th minute, but the situation became even more complicated for Sassuolo six minutes later. Thorstvedt was sent off for a particularly bad foul on Zaccagni, leaving the home side with ten men.

Yet Lazio once again switched off defensively and allowed Sassuolo to reduce the deficit. In the 43rd minute, Laurienté sent a long ball into the penalty area towards the far post. Simone Cinquegrano headed it back towards Sebastiano Esposito, who controlled with his chest, got past Diogo Leite and volleyed past Mandas. It was poor defending from Lazio, who had no reason to make life difficult for themselves.

Fortunately, the two-goal cushion was quickly restored. In the first minute of added time, Isaksen crossed from the right and Zaccagni beat the Sassuolo defence to the ball, heading home for 4-2. Lazio had scored four, and the first half was not even over.

Second half

At half-time, Gattuso decided to give Taylor a rest and introduced Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Alberto Aquilani also made a change, bringing on Ibrahim Sulemana for Darryl Bakola.

In the 47th minute, Lazio were awarded a penalty. Zaccagni attempted a shot, but Cinquegrano stopped the ball with his arm. The Lazio captain stepped up to take the spot kick, but Stefano Turati was not fooled by his movements and comfortably saved.

Lazio were not going to be denied for long. In the 55th minute, Zaccagni picked up the ball on the left and passed to Noslin outside the penalty area. The Dutchman unleashed a superb strike to make it 5-2.

Sassuolo were now on their knees, and Lazio were awarded another penalty in the 60th minute after a foul by Duje Ćaleta-Car on Isaksen. This time Frattesi took responsibility, but his effort was too central. Turati stood his ground and saved again.

The sixth goal arrived five minutes later. Dele-Bashiru found Noslin outside the box, and the forward produced another powerful strike to complete Lazio's scoring. Six goals, and two missed penalties!

The Biancocelesti understandably took their foot off the accelerator. Matteo Cancellieri, who had replaced Isaksen, had a couple of opportunities, but the match gradually petered out.

It was a magnificent demonstration of attacking power from Lazio. Six goals away from home, four already in the first half and two penalties missed along the way. The only blemishes were the defensive lapses that allowed Sassuolo to score twice, but they did little to spoil an otherwise extraordinary afternoon.
